Who We Are
We are a mental health foundation focused on improving self-care, childhood resilience. Our programs address mental health illnesses, homelessness, grooming, support, and promote healing and self-sufficiency in adulthood. So far, we have been able to serve over 1000 black youth in South Bronx’s District 9 and they are presently living out their best lives.
Who we serve
District 9 - NYC Department of Education
District 9 in the New York City Department of Education is located in the western edge of the South Bronx, encompassing neighborhoods such as Claremont, Concourse, Highbridge, Morrisania, Morris Heights, and University Heights. This district includes notable landmarks like Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Roberto Clemente State Park
Homelessness: District 9 has the highest rate of student homelessness in New York City, with approximately 20% of students experiencing homelessness. The district is home to 48 family shelters with a capacity for over 1,700 families, which is the largest number of family shelters in any NYC school district. This high rate of homelessness affects educational outcomes, as homeless students face more significant challenges in achieving academic success compared to their housed peers. Many homeless students in District 9 attend schools with lower overall graduation rates, further exacerbating their educational disadvantages.
Poverty Levels: The South Bronx, which includes District 9, is one of the poorest areas in the United States. The poverty rate in this area is approximately 36.9%, with a severe poverty rate of 16.6%. High rates of poverty, combined with factors like overcrowding and rent burdens, contribute to housing instability and homelessness. The financial strain on families often leads to higher rates of student absenteeism and lower academic performance.
